The fashion industry loves to celebrate love and unity – but hate, rivalries and fights, real or imagined, are its true daily bread. Since couture as we know it was born, the often difficult personalities of designers find themselves fighting in clashes that in some cases become epic in their proportions. The great category of dissing in the fashion world began, ideally, that evening when, at a party in Paris, Coco Chanel pushed Elsa Schiapparelli against a candlestick, causing her to catch fire. But the history of fashion is literally full of fights, envies and bitter conflicts that are sometimes justified and sometimes completely avoidable. Here are the best. 

Bruno Pavlovsky vs. Anthony Vaccarello

Karl is not the only one who has developed a fierce rivalry with Yves. After Tom Ford's tenure at the French fashion house, where he served as creative director from 1999 to 2004, he later spoke about his stormy relationship with his former boss. «Pierre [Bergè, Yves' partner] and Yves were just nasty» Ford said, claiming the duo regularly called the police to shut down his office. "I have letters from Yves Saint Laurent that are so nasty that you can not believe such nastiness is possible. I remember one sentence in particular: «In thirteen minutes you have destroyed 40 years of work». The term probably did not exist then, but today we could call it bullying.

Tyra Banks vs. Naomi Campbell

In the early 1990s, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks had a rather strained relationship. Banks repeatedly stated that the British supermodel made her feel like she was in the way when she was taking her first steps in the industry: «I was walking down the runway and people never imagined that I would come home at night crying in despair because the woman I had great admiration for did not want me there and was doing everything she could to get me to leave.» Although it looked like the two had finally reconciled after the spat on Banks' talk show, Campbell used her Instagram account a few years ago to share an article titled "This is why fans now believe Tyra Banks is the real bad girl and not Naomi Campbell" an unflattering account that highlighted a series of controversial moments during Banks' hosting of America's Next Top Model. Louis Vuitton vs. Supreme

Although the viral collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Supreme unveiled for FW17 has revolutionised our understanding of luxury, the relationship between the two brands had long been strained before this partnership, with the French fashion house running to the lawyers. In 2000, Supreme launched a range of skate decks, caps and T-shirts featuring the signature Louis Vuitton monogram. Just two weeks after the decks shipped, the brand promptly responded with a cease-and-desist letter. According to reports, the French brand was so impressed by the blatant use of its logo that it demanded that the products be destroyed to prevent further distribution.

Kanye West vs. Hedi Slimane

Giorgio Armani often has a serene appearance in the somewhat boisterous world of Italian fashion. Yet it cannot be said that he has ever kept away from clashes and arrows. The most recent and famous dissing is the one with Dolce & Gabbana but the tastier one was the one with Gianni Versace, which dates back to '96. In short, Armani said, in an interview with an American magazine, that fashion was dead. Versace replied in very little nuanced tones: «At the beginning of each season, some fashion stylists suddenly discover that fashion is dead, confusing general conclusions perhaps with a personal problem. This time it is Giorgio Armani who is supporting him, just as he is opening two stores in New York and certainly no records. Strange logic, given that Armani is one of the great names of Made in Italy [...]. [Armani], at 62, is in the curious position of being routinely defined as the first designer in the world, although he is not, at the moment, particularly fashionable». In 2000 there was a revamp of the clash, this time with Donatella Versace, which she defined «rude and tasteless» an interview was given by Armani in America, in which the designer had attributed to Gianni Versace the phrase: «You dress church ladies, I dress sluts».
