Gucci has opened a new genderless shopping section on its website An important step in the house's commitment to inclusivity
Not long ago Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele announced that moving forward the house would be presenting genderless, season-less collections and abandoning the traditional calendar for the upcoming seasons of fashion week, starting with Pre-Fall and FW20. This week, they furthered this commitment to inclusivity by adding a genderless category to the shopping section of their website.
According to the site, the shopping section called "Gucci MX" — in reference to the MX title which is used before a person’s name by those who prefer not to identify themselves as male or female — “is dedicated to Gucci’s collections which emphasize the dissolving lines of the gender divide in the name of self-expression. Playing with the constructive nature of gender, MX underlines the performative nature of what we wear, presenting masculinity and femininity as relative concepts.”
With this step, the house makes history as the first major luxury fashion house to officially offer a genderless selection, which comes as no surprise as the brand has been moving towards gender fluidity in the past few seasons with its use of non-binary models and styling. One can only hope that as they make this move, other houses will follow suit in offering a more inclusive selection to their shoppers.
